So often, lawyers are the bearers of bad news.\u00a0 What will get you sued.\u00a0 Signs a lawsuit is coming.\u00a0 What you can\u2019t say (even though you\u2019d really like to say it!).\u00a0 What \u201cwouldn\u2019t be prudent\u201d.\u00a0 (h\/t SNL).<\/p>\n

Today, we\u2019re turning that on its head, with 3\u00a0signs that you will NOT be\u00a0facing the business end of a lawsuit in the near future.<\/p>\n

Some good signs are obvious.\u00a0 Such as when a client sends you more work, refers you another customer, or says \u201cHey, swell job!\u201d\u00a0 But here are 3 unusual things that are good signs, if only you understand what they are really saying:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 The\u00a0Complaining Client.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When your client complains to you about something you\u2019ve done, not done, or promised but failed to do, that is a good sign.\u00a0 Yes, you heard right.\u00a0 Complaining is caring.\u00a0 It is when\u00a0you don\u2019t hear anything that you could be in the most trouble.\u00a0 If a client is complaining, they are telling you that you need to fix something.\u00a0 That something may or may not be fixable, but at least you know that they value you enough to *want* you to fix it, so they can continue to do business with you.\u00a0 So the next time a client complains to you, remember, it\u2019s much better to have a complaining client, which you can fix, than a completely mad one that will disappear, without a word, to the architect or engineer down the street.\u00a0 Or worse still, to their lawyer\u2019s office.\u00a0 To sue you.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 The Always-Calling Client.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your client calls you to talk about the project a\u00a0lot, that can be a good sign?\u00a0 Yes, even if they interrupt your train of thought and your design process.\u00a0 If your client is not afraid to pick up the phone and call you, then you are keeping the communication lines open.\u00a0 It is when you don\u2019t hear from clients regularly that expectations are missed, misunderstandings accrue, or unpaid invoices result.\u00a0 A happy client is an engaged client.\u00a0 An engaged client will be in touch- often.\u00a0 This is not to say you can\u2019t set parameters, such as what times of day you return client phone calls.\u00a0 But calling is good, regardless of the subject (short of a Trump-like \u201cYou\u2019re Fired\u201d).<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 The No-Boundaries Client.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When your client asks your opinion on non-design issues, that is a great sign.\u00a0 She wants referrals to your accountant.\u00a0 He wants to know where you think he should take an important investor to dinner.\u00a0 Any time you find yourself having conversations about things that are not, strictly speaking, work-related, that is a very good sign indeed.\u00a0 People do business with those they know, trust, and like.\u00a0 They also tend not to sue those that they know, trust, and like.<\/p>\n
