(Photo: Thinkstock)<\/p>\n<p>Within the insurance industry, we take certain attributes for granted: diligence, detail orientation, a fundamental understanding of data.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s rare to take a step back and examine the actual psychological characteristics of insurance executives\u00a0\u2014\u00a0how they think, how they make decisions, how they approach interactions with others.<\/p>\n<p>What is the psychological profile of an insurance executive\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and how does this profile differ from the attributes of executives in other fields?<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by Russell Reynolds Associates\u00a0sought to answers these questions by analyzing the leadership and behavioral attributes\u00a0of 87\u00a0insurance executives, and comparing those executives to the more than 5,000\u00a0executives across all industries in Russell Reynolds&#8217;s\u00a0database.<\/p>\n<p>Three psychometric tests were used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16pf, which measures communication and teamwork styles.<\/li>\n<li>OPQ-32, which examines personality related to management and leadership roles.<\/li>\n<li>Hogan Development Survey, which identifies patterns of behavior that tend to appear when a person is stressed or under pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The overall findings were striking. Insurance executives, defying stodgy industry stereotypes, score high on some quite vibrant personality traits.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-weight: 600;\">The &#8216;secret sauce&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Understanding this profile (as well as how these traits can be developed) can be of tremendous value to anyone in the insurance field.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0personality traits of insurance executives\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the \u201csecret sauce\u201d of this group of executives\u00a0\u2014\u00a0fall into three camps: possessing a concerned eye, being a steady pair of hands, and embodying dynamism.<\/p>\n<p>Here is our profile of what makes a good insurance executive:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/media.propertycasualty360.com\/propertycasualty360\/article\/2015\/11\/09\/concerned-eye---thinkstockphotos-87345713.jpg\" alt=\"Concerned eye\" width=\"321\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><em>(Photo: Thinkstock)<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong style=\"font-weight: 600;\"> They possess\u00a0a concerned eye<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Insurance\u00a0executives are more likely to worry before significant occasions than the average executive. Are you perceived as being emotional or intense? Make sure you\u2019re managing the\u00a0\u201curgent vs.\u00a0important\u201d\u00a0tradeoff correctly. Place greater trust in your inner voice\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and don\u2019t hesitate to verbalize your position on an issue followed up by the proper supporting points.
