Dogmatic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Annie Dike, Esq. | IMS ExpertServices\u00ae | February 2, 2016<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog page-text\">Did anyone catch that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/12\/01\/457974684\/being-labeled-an-expert-may-contribute-to-someone-being-closed-minded\">NPR bit<\/a>? Apparently, when you label someone an <a href=\"http:\/\/expertwitnessinconstruction.com\/experts.php\" target=\"_blank\">expert<\/a>, you can make him behave close-mindedly. The theory is, the mere label itself bolsters the person and makes him more confident in his opinions but also more engrained, more dogmatic in his approach. Think about that for a minute. If the label creates a dogmatic mindset, is it more of a stigma than an honor?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Novice or Expert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ims-expertservices.com\/getmedia\/48456960-3fd0-443e-83e6-d6eebc013497\/Novice-or-expert.aspx?width=250&amp;height=187\" alt=\"Novice or Expert\" \/>Here\u2019s what went down. The social science gurus decided to test their hypothesis on people that did not yet have (and perhaps did not quite deserve) the \u2018expert\u2019 title, to see what effect it had on them. They brought in a group of volunteers, half of whom were awarded the title \u2018expert\u2019 while half \u2500 their egos thoroughly deflated \u2500 were informed they fell well below the \u2018expert\u2019 mark. The most important part of this test, however, was what happened <em>after<\/em>.\u00a0 The people whom they labeled experts began to act differently. They became more confident in their opinions, and \u2013 the downside &#8211; less likely to listen to others and more fixed in their views. The label itself, apparently worn like a gallant cloak around their shoulders, actually <em>changed<\/em> their behavior.<\/p>\n<p>We found this study intriguing, and it got us thinking about two different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myconstructionexpert.com\/blog\/mine-better-battle-experts-construction-lawsuit-law-order-hard-hat-files-part-6\/\" target=\"_blank\">experts<\/a>: experienced testifiers and novice testifiers. Both may be experts in their field, but only the expert with experience in the courtroom has lived with the label of \u2018expert\u2019 as a professional designation. Do you believe the label itself can have a detrimental effect on the witness\u2019s presentation? Still more important, would such an alteration be a bad thing? Confidence can be an asset on the stand, though not if the expert simply comes across as narrow-minded.<\/p>\n<p>The focus in trial often seems to be more on the expertise, experience, and proven reputation of Dr. So-and-So in his respective field as opposed to his mere label as an expert in the case. Does this rule of thumb also apply when you are\u00a0<em>searching<\/em> for a so-called expert?\u00a0 While you obviously want someone who is an expert in his field, do you also want him to be just that \u2500 still in the field?\u00a0 Do you feel an expert who is still actively practicing as a doctor, director, professor, etc. is somehow more persuasive? In line with the \u2018expert label\u2019 theory, do you feel it keeps the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myconstructionexpert.com\/blog\/mine-better-battle-experts-construction-lawsuit-law-order-hard-hat-files-part-6\/\" target=\"_blank\">expert<\/a> more open-minded and willing to consider new methodologies or principles?
